Former Governors Amaechi and Imoke to Decide on Coalition’s Party Strategy

Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke have been tasked with leading committees to determine the best path for a national opposition coalition: whether to form a new political party or merge into an existing one.

This decision was outlined in a communique read by Dr. Umar Ardo, Convener of the League of Northern Democrats (LND), following an expanded meeting in Abuja on Thursday. The gathering included prominent figures such as former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau and other northern political leaders. The coalition, driven by key opposition personalities like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, aims to address Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.

Ardo, addressing journalists, explained that the coalition established two committees to evaluate options. Imoke heads the committee exploring fusion into an existing party, while Amaechi chairs the one assessing the feasibility of registering a new party. Ardo served as secretary for Amaechi’s subcommittee.

Both committees have submitted their reports, and a final decision is scheduled for May 30. If a mega party proves unviable, the coalition is considering platforms like the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Ardo noted that El-Rufai raised concerns about the SDP’s interest in joining the coalition, which influenced the timeline for the decision.

Beyond party formation, the LND resolved to engage the 19 northern state governors on critical issues plaguing the region, including widespread poverty, destitution, insecurity, and unemployment. Ardo criticized the governors for their “inertia” in tackling these problems and emphasized the need for action.

The group also committed to mobilizing northerners and Nigerians at large to pressure the government, particularly legislators, to uphold and protect the Nigerian Constitution. This multifaceted approach underscores the coalition’s broader goal of fostering political reform and accountability.
